May 6, 2016 Family Art Show & Silent Auction
In January 2016, with the support of the Pittsfield Cultural Council, Art Therapist, Marney Schorr and The Christian Center began a free weekly expressive arts program for underserved families in Pittsfield. The Family Art Therapy Project gives families a reprieve from difficult conditions and a safe place to engage in quality art-making, family building skills and cross-participation with the arts scene of the Berkshires.
In the Fall of 2015, Marney Schorr met with Ellen Merritt, Director of the Christian Center to begin a collaboration of private local artists, businesses who participate in Cultural Pittsfield's Arts Walk and their non-profit - the oldest human services organization in the Berkshires. The program makes use of the arts to combat the daily stressors of homelessness and hunger amongst families in our community.
On Friday, May 6, 2016, the participating families pair with local artists to present their FAMILY ART SHOW & SILENT AUCTION at the Whitney Center for the Arts during First Fridays Arts Walk. The reception is from 5-8 pm and is followed by a family-friendly after party with live music. This event is open to the public, is free and family-friendly.
The Family Art Show offers original art for sale made by local families - these include abstract 'feelings' paintings on canvas, a community animal house assemblage, and a mixed media neighborhood triptych mural. The Silent Auction features family-themed paintings by artists Ellen Joffe-Halpern, Claudia Shuster, Sally Tiska Rice and Scott Harrington. Also showing at in the Colt Gallery of The Whitney, is the Berkshire United Way's Youth Expo, raising awareness about Teen Pregnancy.
Proceeds of the Silent Auction benefit the Christian Center, and their ongoing mission to "uplift the community by empowering individuals with dignity, nourishment, and hope."
