Transforming Depression With Art is a 12 week Art Therapy Program aimed at healing the effects of depression through spontaneous creative expression and group support.  We will be working with a holistic model, bringing out various aspects of the Self in the form of symbolic art and archetypes. We will track weekly progress, use guided visualization, journaling and art-making. Materials include painting, collage, clay, and more. $20.00 per session with a 12 week commitment.

Join me this Fall for an engaging six week course in Art & Spirituality at Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. We will use select readings in modern art and psychology as well as art materials to explore the spiritual dimension that exists within each of us. Self Soothing with Art & DBT - Summer 2016

This 11 week art therapy series focuses on self-soothing our emotions and worries with mindfulness and expressive arts. Helpful for depression and for calming intense feelings and worries with creativity and the five senses. 

You will learn valuable creative tools for regulating emotions and distress tolerance such as grounding, creative visualization and getting unstuck.  We will also practice mindful relationship skills in this small group setting at a private art studio.

Come explore clay, sand, collage, watercolors, acrylic paint on canvas, doll-making, mandalas and visual mapping as self-soothing strategies for managing stress. Please be prepared to commit to the entire series as each session is part of an integral process and space is limited to four participants.

Art & Soul

Come explore your soul with art-making in a private art studio this summer. This five week expressive arts series focuses on nature metaphors for cultivating positive enrichment in our lives in a small group setting. We will work with cocoons, bird's nests, nature's storms and our own personal 'metamorphosis' using a variety of art materials and creative visualization.

Art Therapy & The 12 Steps for Women in Recovery  - June 2016

This five week expressive arts series focuses on the first three steps of Alcoholics Anonymous adapted for women in all forms of recovery.We will read the steps from A Woman's Way Through the 12 Steps and use our natural creativity to enhance recovery. We will surrender with air dry clay, let go with watercolors and turn it over with God boxes.

In this six week OLLI course, participants will read and discuss essays about creativity that have inspired and empowered women, with themes such as childhood and creativity, feminine power, and rediscovering the creative self. Selections from authors such as Alice Miller and Pat B. Allen will guide us in making art and telling our stories. Engage in art as therapy, including watercolors, charcoal and visual journaling.

Nature's Retreat: Art as Therapy

October 2015

As we retreat into a quieter time and prepare for the holidays ahead, it can be vital to maintain a sense of self care and support from others. This six week art therapy series honors creative process with the natural cycle of the seasons, in particular the late Autumn and early Winter months. 

We will use both natural and man-made artist materials to cultivate an ease of transition into winter, such as paint, paper, sand, leaves, clay, string and natural found objects.

Art Therapy and the 12 Steps is a women's confidential peer support group utilizing art materials, journaling & discussion to enhance personal recovery from addictions. We will focus on creative process & spiritual principles adapted from the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. 

Each meeting will contain readings from a source of recovery about one of the 12 steps and a topic for art making. Give your recovery a creative boost with painting, oil pastels, magazine collage, clay, sculpture, visual journaling and more!   

This group is facilitated by Art Therapist, Marney Schorr at her private art studio located at 311 North St at the corner of Union St, next to Mary's Carrot Cake. Please use the Union Street entrance.

Collage Cards at OLLI!

This class will introduce students to an intuitive approach to art-making adapted from Seena Frost's Soul Collage. We will explore envisioning self in its many roles through found images. We will also create affirmations for strengthening self esteem and building a renewed sense of spirit in our day to day lives. Students will learn the basics of collage, the history of collage and make collage cards in class with the opportunity for discussion. 

Materials: Please bring favorite magazines for cutting images and a box to keep your collage cards in.

Art Therapy with Altered Books!

 FALL 2015

Who are your emotions? What kinds of characters are they? What do they look like and where do they live? Join me this fall in telling the rich yet untold story of our emotional qualities in words and pictures. Experience altered books as a form of art therapy. What are altered books? An altered book is a form of mixed media artwork that changes a book from its original form into a different form, altering its appearance and meaning. In this six week series, we will take old books and transform them into our own personal stories. We will cut, tear, glue, fold, paint, collage, draw and sculpt using recycled books as objects of art.

Explore a variety of materials with an Art Therapist in a local professional art studio. Develop new relationships in a small group setting. And experience the therapeutic benefits of spontaneous art expression!

What's Behind That Image? The Development of Art Therapy

This course will introduce students to the historical development of art therapy from pre-World War II to the present, including the two "schools" of thought of art therapy. We will discuss pioneers in the field and the assessments widely used in art therapy today.

Through Part lecture and part art-making students will be guided in creating art that is spontaneous and expressive while learning how to analyze art with art therapy principles.

Nature's Camouflage

Enjoy a sensory based art experience in a natural farm setting with Teaching Artist & Art Therapist, Marney Schorr. Discover organic art materials as you explore the beautiful nine acres at Trading Post Farm located midway between Rhinebeck and Hudson, NY.

In this class, we will create our own pigments from handpicked flowers and local herbs. We will use these pigments to make a series of small watercolor paintings from our immediate personal experience in nature.

Come allow yourself to retreat from everyday consumerism and become 'camouflaged' with nature. Take off external layers of the hustle and bustle and reconnect to the quiet harmony of the earth.

No experience is necessary and all materials are provided. This workshop is for ages 10 and up. We will work outdoors and indoors, so please be mindful of the sun and wear old clothes as some natural paints may stain.

 Earth Day Arts Adventure

Parents with toddlers and school-age children can create miniature wind turbines in the form of ‘garden pinwheels’ to see how wind energy works. DESCRIPTION: Pittsfield teens are invited to join a 8 week 'art as therapy' series exclusively for teens. Art Therapist Marney Schorr, Gallery Owner Jay Elling, and Max Moy-Borgen from Pittsfield Youth Commission will co-facilitate this 8-week theme-based group on the topic: "What would Pittsfield look like if 'Teens Took Over'?

Particiaption is free. Group members choose from a variety of 2-D and 3-D media including found objects & recycled materials, collage, markers, charcoal, paints and clay. You will have a chance to photograph your work and display it digitally in a virtual online gallery - as well as guidance on how to develop a product for sale at the Gallery! This is a unique opportunity to learn 'hands-on' real life gallery experience with visiting local artists.

Social action is part of this year's theme at the 42nd Annual AATA Conference in Washington D.C.  Here in our nation's capital you will be guided through the history of art therapy and mental health care in America - including the most recent changes under President Bush and President Obama.  Explore how we can combat stigma when we break from the old patient-doctor model and begin to collaborate with clients.

Registration for this course also runs in conjunction with two other conference events: (1) The July 7th Advocacy training session and afternoon of advocacy on Capitol Hill; and (2) the July 8th Keynote Address "Transforming Mental Health Care in America," the 2005 Federal Action Agenda which established the most recent changes in mental health care policy.
